What is Rotary? |
Rotary International is a world-wide fellowship of business and professional people who are united in the ideal of service to the community-locally, nationally and internationally. This dual ideal of fellowship and service is shared by well over 1 million members of more than 26,000 clubs in about 150 countries. The motto of Rotary is "Service above self", and all Rotarians follow the same guiding principles. Membership of all Rotary Clubs is by invitation and is drawn from those who live or work in the area around each club. We actively look for new members, and if you are interested in learning more about Rotary, and Didcot Rotary Club in particular, then please contact us via our secretary.

All of the activities of Rotary Clubs are completely open, and we welcome and encourage the interest of the community in what we do. We are non-sectarian in Religion and not linked to any political party. We are certainly NOT a secret society. Rotarians are encouraged to visit other clubs whenever they have the opportunity on business or social trips. Wherever you travel, you can be sure to be amongst friends who share similar ideals.

Much of the charitable work of Rotary is focused on local needs and responses for help, and you will find Rotary clubs providing "service" in the local community by assisting in all manner of ways, from providing transport to pensioners, to running educational initiatives in schools for drugs awareness. Internationally, Rotary Clubs have contributed to eye camps in India and Africa, to the eradication of polio, emergency disaster aid via the provision of supplies and "Aqua Boxes", and books and tools to third world countries. |

Rotary Clubs generally meet once a week either at breakfast, lunchtime or in the evening. (Didcot Rotary Club for instance meet on a Thursday lunchtime). During the meetings there are reports, discussions and guest speakers on a variety of interesting and relevant topics. The meetings are run by our President, who serves for one year. Club members are allocated by the President to one of four committees that cover the service, community, vocational and international aspects of our activities. Rotary will make some demands on your time, and it is up to the individual to decide how much they can manage. |
